The Town of Field

The town of Field, located 20 km north of Sturgeon Falls along Highway 64, is named after legislator Corelli Collard Field. This tiny town has everything you need- a grocery store, an LCBO and tavern, and Annette’s Kitchen, famous for bacon and eggs breakfast. There’s also a seasonal chip stand that serves delicious local staple poutine. (Poutine is a Franco-Canadian tradition of cheese curds and gravy on French fries.)  Logging began in the area around 1886, which brought small logging populations with it and a log church was erected in 1879, followed a few years later by a post office. Railway construction began in 1912, and Field saw its first train in 1915. However, the entire Canadian National Railroad line in the area was abandoned in 1995. This little town has seen its fair share of disasters. In 1928 there was a major flood. In 1970, half a million dollars was spent repairing homes destroyed by a summer tornado that killed one local and injured many. The worst however, was in 1979 when the Sturgeon River rose twenty feet and flooded most of the village. Most of the town relocated a mile south to a site called Val Des Arbres.

Useful Information

Field has more than you may expect, a post office, library, fire station, and emergency response a Grocery store with a nice section for local arts and crafts, also an LCBO.  Annette's Kitchen, local eatery serves hardy home style meals; we recommend the bacon and eggs breakfast. You can also get Bait tackle and Gas from right beside Annette's.  Field Tavern has billiards, food and occasional live music. The Chip Stand is open seasonally and folks come from all over to gobble the great culinary delight and local staple... Poutine.
